Omega 6: How much do we really to Supplement

Omega 6 fatty acids are essential fatty acids that can only be provided through food and supplements, Omega 6 is very important for brain function, growth and development.

This Polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) also stimulates skin and hair growth and maintains good bone health, keeps your metabolism regular and keeps the reproductive system healthy.

Omega 6 Foods & Supplements

There are several different types of Omega 6 fatty acids, most of them come from vegetable oils such as Linoleic acid. Linoleic acid is converted into GLA in the body, from there it breaks down into arachidonic acid.

Omega 6 fatty acids can be found in supplements, but whenever possible it's alays best to get the nutrients via foods, in this case beef, chicken, eggs along with nuts and plant based oils are great sources. The problem is that a typical everyday diet tends to contain significant amounts of Omega6 in comparison to Omega 3, due to the fact Omega 6 is present in quite a lot of unhealthy foods, e.g. Salad dressing, chips, crisps, pizza, pasta and processed meats like sausages.

People who eat a more Mediterranean type of diet have a better balance of Omega 6 and Omega 3 as there is less consumption of meat compared to a more Western European diet.A diet of more fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, fish, olive oil, garlic etc help balance out the fatty acid ratio.

There need to be a balance between the essential fatty acids in both Omega 6 and Omega 3, its suggested a ratio of 2:1 Omega 6 to Omega 3.

• Keep your Omega 6 and Omega 3 in balance
•Consuming too much Omega 6 and not enough Omega 3 will cause a fatty acid imbalance.
•Omega 6 is present within most unhealthy foods, So moderate!!
