Chickpea Dahl, Your Training Pal

Serves 4
  • 1tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 2 tsp cumin (I like 1tsp ground and one whole but all ground is fine)
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced or grated
  • 3cm ginger, freshly grated
  • 400ml coconut milk (either 1 can or make up from powder)
  • 1 X 400g can of chickpeas, drained
  • 150g lentils or yellow split peas
  • 200g fresh or frozen spinach
  • Salt and pepper
  • 3 Whole Chilli’s (Optional)
If using yellow split peas, place in pan of boiling water, cook for 20minutes.
Dry fry the spices for 1 minute with a pinch of salt.
Add coconut oil, when it is melted add onion and cook for 5 minutes until soft.
Add garlic and ginger, cook for 1 minute.
Pour in coconut milk with salt and pepper to taste.
Add chickpeas and lentils or pre-cooked split peas. (add Optional Chill’s)
Cook covered for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add spinach, stir through and cook for 5 minutes.


For a more substantial meal can be eaten with boiled rice or chapatis.
